However, this can cause MP4 files to get corrupted and cause a minor loss of detail and color saturation in the movie. To speed up processing time, the MP4 encoding process will often find clusters of pixels with the same color. Specifically, it can do this by removing unnecessary data in most video files. The fact that the format provides high-quality video at a reduced file size is a big draw for many people. Although MP4 didn't appear until 2001, it became widely used almost immediately. As a globally compatible format, it has found widespread use. Video files encoded in MP4 format are quite popular. Modern digital media players widely support MP4. Jancourtz or anyone else has more than three minutes worth of new, constructive comments or questions, she and anyone else would be welcome to speak as many times as they wish until the question is moved. If they find their comments or concerns are not expressed by others, they are welcome to line up again for another opportunity to speak. If a speaker has several points and runs out of time, I will ask that they finish their point and allow others to speak. Soft music will begin when the speaker has approximately 30 seconds to alert them to conclude their remarks. Others who wish to speak will be expected to limit their remarks to three minutes. In fact, a motion could even be made from the floor to follow certain meeting rules that differ from hers.įor the benefit of those who have not experienced or heard of my proposals, I will summarize them here:įirst, article proposers have been asked to limit their presentations to eight minutes. Town meeting members will also have the opportunity to accept or reject her proposals for the proceedings, as they will for each meeting until codified in the bylaws. Jancourtz is elected on May 7, she will not preside until the following meeting, whether it is a special town meeting in the fall of 2011 or the annual in May 2012. As such, until codified in the bylaws, I will be requesting approval by Town Meeting members of my proposed rules on May 9 and in subsequent meetings. In any event, since the bylaws are silent on specific procedures, the voters at town meeting have the right and authority to determine the process. That said, I view the annual Town Meeting as a continuation of the test, given the much smaller scale of the first experiment. The efficacy of the test and the experiences of other town meetings in other towns informed my decision to propose the procedures at the forthcoming annual Town Meeting. When I first proposed these procedures preceding the November 2010 special Town Meeting, I clearly indicated that they would be a test. Jancourtz also feels that I am “imposing” these changes and abrogating civil rights. There are no “regulations” until codified in the town’s bylaws rules applied to specific town meetings must be approved by its members. Jancourtz and other moderators may use other rules and processes to achieve the same objectives. While I believe my proposed rules achieve these objectives, Ms. “Equally smashing, of course, is the actual smashing, whether you’re careening through trackside objects or mercilessly poleaxing your opposition. There are significant differences in grip from mud or gravel to tarmac but, with Wreckfest’s well-tuned sense of weight and friction, the handling overall is smashing. There’s also a motorised couch, which handles a lot better than I’d expected it would (but probably could’ve done with some wheelie bars). The RV is probably my favourite as, despite its heft and relatively low power, it just loves being whipped sideways into ludicrous drifts. Live to race, race what you live in.The special vehicles are another story altogether, from the top-heavy double-decker cars and rollover-prone schoolbuses to the huge harvester with its distinctive rear-wheel steering. Some of the cars feel quite similar to each other but overall there are notable differences between the range of body types, from muscle to family wagons, and from sports coupes to front-wheel drive hatchbacks. Smaller European and Japanese models are nimbler but they’re also lighter, and some are prone to pitching themselves into lethal tankslappers. Hulking American muscle cars and land yachts squat back on their worn springs and need to be wrestled into heroic Hollywood powerslides and steered on the throttle. A fairly typical array of driving aids is on hand to tone it down a little, but I reckon Wreckfest is at its best when most of them are stripped away and we have to work harder behind the wheel. Stop: How and where does the collaborative work happen?Įric: At places like Campus Libre and the Forge. This is a major difference from the standard, official version of OpenOffice, in which it is much harder to have added some feature that you requested. Stop: So, in the long run, it’s almost like the teachers themselves were able to modify the software to fit their own needs.Įric: Correct. Looking at the proposal, we could easily see that we should implement the toolbar for children between 7 and 9 years of age first, and then the one for older kids. Then we got an extremely interesting suggestion just through the “Ideas and Suggestions” page of our wiki: different, user-selectable toolbars for several age ranges. Stop: Can you describe to us an example of this collaboration?Įric: We had no exact idea of what the simplified toolbars of the word processor should look like. Eventually, after several iterations, we achieve what is expected, or at least be as close as possible. When teachers answer, we the developers explain what is “doable”. Therefore, we ask teachers things like “What features have to be used, at a given age” or “What do you want to be immediately visible in the graphical interface, before clicking anywhere”. Teachers also know best than us what they need from OpenOffice and the requirements of local school programs. It is teachers who know very well the children, what they can do and what is not suited to them. How do you work, and why?Įric: Our method is very simple! We developers ask questions directly to the teachers who join the project, because they have the right knowledge. Stop: I mentioned that OOo4Kids is interesting also because how the way it is developed. Everybody willing to add other languages is welcome to join the project. The current version is available in French, Portuguese, English, German and Spanish. Stop: Is OOo4Kids available in different languages?Įric: Yes. Just like the original OpenOffice, it also works on Windows and Mac OS. Stop: OOo4Kids doesn’t seem limited at all to primary school children! Everybody who thinks that normal office suites are too slow and complicated, or just has a slower computer will love it, but… does it only run on Linux?Įric: Not at all. Stop: That’s an impressive task! What is the result?Įric: OOo4Kids runs correctly on a Celeron 500 + 128 MB of RAM, and on the XO too. To make OpenOffice run on these limited machines we had to simplify its source code and reduce the binary size of about 35%. Other users asked me an office suite that would run even on XO laptops. Many of our users, especially schools, only have old computers with little memory. Stop: Do you do all this only to simplify the interface?Įric: No, we also want to solve another serious problem which is very common here in France and, I’m sure, everywhere else. We have also removed some components which are almost never needed by those users, like support for Databasesii and Java scripting. The interface is explicitly designed for children in the 7 to 12 years age range: attractive and very simple, without looking for this like some bad 3D cartoon. Stop: Eric, what are the main features of OOo4Kids?Įric: OOo4Kids is much simpler to use than the original OpenOffice. Keep reading to know, straight from OOo4Kids developer Eric Bachard, what is that makes OOo4kids unique. Besides, interaction with developers seems much simpler and friendlier than in many other Free Software projects. OOo4Kids is a special version of (the popular, free and easy to use alternative to Microsoft Office) which is very interesting and useful not only for schools, but also for many adult users. Why do we strongly believe that policies should be on websites? Great question. Sometimes this helps people find churches that are aligned with their values - that’s great, but that is not our primary goal. Why do we do this? Our goal is to motivate churches to become clear on their websites because that is presently the most visible advertisement to the public. We always respond by saying, “That’s good to know please update your website so that this information is publicly available and also consider becoming Verified Clear we’d love to update your score.” Or, “Please provide us with online evidence of what you’re talking about on the church or denomination website, and we’d love to update the score.” We sometimes get emails from pastors and congregants telling us that the score we’ve given to a church does not accurately reflect what happens in their church. İf you are an Android user and want to explore other options, there are several great alternatives available in the market. Goodnotes for Android is a highly popular note-taking app used by many professionals and students. A LinkedIn spokesperson said that “this is just the beginning” and that the company “will continue to leverage generative AI to explore new ways to bring value to our members and customers. The Best Alternatives of Goodnotes for Android So in all, the release of these tools underscores how AI may be a powerful tool, but that universal application is not always for the best. That would be less the case for recruitment advertisements, which today already feel hugely anodyne and often do not really give anyone an accurate idea of what might be expected in a particular role, let alone what it would be like to work at a particular company, and we don’t read them to get a sense of the recruiter’s voice. But recruitment and anything where you are connecting with a particular person feels like it should be in the same category, for the same reason that you wouldn’t want to match with someone on Tinder only to find out that the person in the profile pic is not the actual person - or for the same reason why we don’t want people to lie about their experience on job applications.įor now, it feels like LinkedIn is firmly coming down on the side of “don’t disclose.” This has been especially important in areas like education, where you’re meant to be directly evaluated on your own work, not just the content of it but what you’ve done to get that. There are big question marks hanging over some of the ethical uses of generative AI right now - in particular whether or not it should, by default, be made clear to the world when it has been used in the process of creating something. That is because LinkedIn has confirmed to me that is not making it clear when an AI has played a role in helping write those words, so you don’t really get a sense of whether someone actually has the skill to summarize their own work well, and if that’s really their “voice” coming across for a first impression, or if they simply have the skill to click “do this for me” for an AI assistant to do it for them. Ultimately, that might mean more rather than less wasted time for recruiters and others who might be checking out a profile and looking to make a connection. In the case of those writing their profiles, if the aim of the profile description is to get an idea of the person you are potentially recruiting or networking with, you are getting further from that essence by using AI to generate those descriptions. While both are aimed at saving time for users, and getting them to keep those profiles more up to date, or to spur more recruitment business by making it easier to spin up those job profiles, I can think of at least a couple of red flags. It’s not clear if that means LinkedIn will algorithmically surface AI-based profiles more frequently in searches to promote the tool, or if it’s because the AI has been tweaked to produce text that works with SEO. The prompt to use the tool for profile writing touts that it can help you get noticed, noting that using it helps you “stand out for almost 2x as many opportunities”. The AI-writing prompts for profiles - available initially to paying Premium users - are aimed at helping people who have trouble writing their own enticing overviews of who they are, but might at least be able to spell out some of what they’ve done, which in turn gets translated into a more fluid narrative by the AI. Alongside this, the company is also creating a bigger focus on AI in LinkedIn Learning, corralling 100 courses around the subject and adding 20 more focused just on generative AI. LinkedIn is using GPT-4 for personalized profiles, with GPT-3.5 for job descriptions. Both are built on advanced GPT models, said Tomer Cohen, LinkedIn’s chief product officer. The company is today introducing AI-powered writing suggestions, which will initially be offered to people to spruce up their LinkedIn profiles, and to recruiters writing job descriptions. Now, with its owner Microsoft going all-in on OpenAI, it looks like it’s becoming a more prominent part of the strategy for LinkedIn on the front end, too - with the latest coming today in the areas of LinkedIn profiles, recruitment and LinkedIn Learning. Earlier this month, when LinkedIn started seeding “ AI-powered conversation starters” in people’s news feeds to boost engagement on its platform, the move saw more than little engagement of its own, none of it too positive.īut the truth of the matter with LinkedIn is that it’s been using a lot of AI and other kinds of automation across different aspects of its platform for years, primarily behind the scenes with how it builds and operates its network. |
